Walking into your garden is like walking into a room. So why not bring the garden room into your home? Suppose a certain location in your yard draws your attention from a particular window in your home. Why not turn that location into a beautiful garden space that can be enjoyed throughout the year from that vantage point in your home?
The Friends of Covington Beautification Awards will be presented this year during a “Covington After Hours” event that will be held Wednesday, October 8, in the Behringer-Crawford Museum in Devou Park. The event is scheduled to begin at 5:30.
This will be the 23rd year in which the Friends have recognized property owners who have invested time and money in an effort to make Covington a more attractive place to live, work and play. Winners will receive banners to display on their homes.
The Friends of Covington Beautification Awards committee toured virtually every neighborhood in Covington early in August in the initial phase of its effort to determine which homes deserve Beautification Awards for 2014.
Some 20 homes throughout the city had been nominated for the award, which has recognized Covington homeowners for making their property stand out because of exterior improvements that complement both the neighborhood and the city as a whole.
The committee, however, did not limit itself to reviewing only homes that had been formally nominated.
Founded in January of 2007, this charming eatery at 724 Madison is next to the Madison Theater, the former movie theater that has become a venue for live music concerts and other special events.
The owners are Dennis and Mandy Wainscott, who get plenty of help from their family. Both of Dennis’ parents help out and Mandy’s mother, Esther Johnson, owns the adjacent theater, which is why the Wainscott’s decided to call their restaurant the “Backstage Café.” A serving window between the two buildings allows theater patrons and performers to order food from the restaurant.
With the coming of spring there arises the opportunity to chase those winter blues by renewing or developing an interest in gardening. A garden in your yard can serve as a private escape from the demands of everyday life. Gardening gives one the opportunity to exercise their creative spirit and turn their garden into a work of beauty to be enjoyed by you as well as friends and neighbors. The value of gardening has many proven benefits, but for myself, I’ve found it to be a great source of exercise. One can burn 300 to 400 calories per hour by gardening.
